ERA – the European Regions Airline Association – assigned to Greek Carrier AEGEAN AIRLINES the “Gold Award Airline of the Year 2004/5”. Aegean Airlines’ President and CEO Theodoros Vassilakis accepted the award on September 30th, in a ceremony held in conjunction with the Associations’ annual General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, with 600 international press and airlines’ delegates.

“This award reflects the efforts of all my colleagues at Aegean and therefore I would like to dedicate it to them” said Aegean Airlines President and CEO Th. Vassilakis. “It also reflects the satisfaction of more than 13 million passengers and it boosts our confidence and pledge to continue in the same way. Our love in what we do make us determined and persistent. This award makes our will to face the future even stronger” concluded Th. Vassilakis.

The ERA Airline of the Year Award is the most recognized Airline Award for this sector of the industry. The winning airlines were chosen by an independent media panel of nine leading airline journalists coming from several different European countries.

The aim of the Airline of the Year Award is to recognize the best overall achievement in the previous 12 months by an ERA member airline based on a wide range of criteria such as commercial and marketing strategy, finance, environment, operational efficiency and performance, product and customer service and industry representation.

Aegean’s success in developing its own market, in a heavily competitive environment and at a time when the industry was recovering from SARS and the Iraqi war, was one of the major factors in the judges’ decision. The airline achieved financial growth of 11% in 2003 and in the domestic market, Aegean’s passengers grew by 17%, which was almost the entire share of Greek domestic market growth that year. Aegean was also lauded for its public service oriented routes that are operated without obligation, its impressive on-time performance and for innovations such as the extension of e-ticketing to travel agents introduced earlier this year.

Factors which won judging panel credit were:

  1. “Aegean has developed its own market against heavy competition”.
  2. “They have successfully turned their finances around, transforming a loss into a profit”.
  3. “By linking island communities to the mainland their routes are very public service oriented without the PSO obligation”.
  4. “The best flight regularity of all entrants”.
  5. “The introduction of electronic ticketing from the airline website, including for agents”.
  6. “Improved seat quality in business class and access to lounges at international airports”.
  7. “Good customer service and on-time performance”.
