The European Regions Airline Association (R) is the European Association that integrates the largest number of members in the aeronautical sector. It incorporates 83 airlines, 18 aircraft and aeronautical component manufacturers, 49 airports and 94 other institutions. Its combined fleet has a total of 1,270 aircraft, and carries more than 68 millions passengers per year, with an annual growth of 9.70%.

The decision was based on a wide range of criteria, such as punctuality and load factor, financial growth, technical and operational excellence, fleet composition & network development, marketing innovation and business strategy, customer service and passenger perception.

The winning airlines were chosen by an independent media panel of 9 journalists who specialise in aviation issues, coming from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.

Factors which won judging panel credit were:
1. Dynamism, persistence and fighting spirit in a very difficult political environment.
2. Considerable passenger growth and financial success in only 1 year of commercial operations.
3. Young modern fleet and extensive regional network linking island communities.
4. High quality customer service and on-time performance.
