September 2016 - Tribute to Dodecanese

For another month, we bring you closer to Greece by filling our aircraft with unique traditional tastes and beautiful images of distinctive corners of Greece.

For many people, September is just the perfect time to visit the Greek islands, in a more solitary way but still in a summer mood. This is why we dedicate this month to Dodecanese islands, a cluster of islands with several authentic traditions and alternative beauties in the southeast Aegean Sea, extending from Crete to Samos and off the coast of Asia Minor; a homeland of Aegean Sea’s civilization, a group of islands hiding centuries of history and culture.

In the southeast corner, you will find the astonishing island of Rhodes of the Knights. Medieval castles, the “Valley of the Butterflies” and the ancient presence of the Colossus are welcoming you to an unforgettable experience.

In the southern part of the complex, you will find the island of Karpathos with the hospitable people and the colorful diversities, the island of Kasos with its well-buried, hidden treasures and the tiny and picturesque island of Kastellorizo. In the west, you will meet Astypalaia with its main town being built over a rock that penetrates the sea in a spectacular way. In the north of the Dodecanese, there are Kos, Leros and Kalymnos. Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates and one of the most cosmopolitan islands in Greece. Leros is the birthplace of the ancient goddess Artemis and offers fascinating and isolated coasts. On the other side, Kalymnos is worldwide famous for its hiking spots and the local tradition of sponge diving, making it famous across the Mediterranean.

The island complex of Dodecanese is also complemented by magnificent Patmos, idyllic Simi, volcanic Nisyros, colorful Tilos, divine Lipsi and many more clusters of small islands and islets.

In order to bring you closer to this experience and the local delicacies of these islands, in our lounges you will be treated with crunchy syrup-soaked small rolls with walnut and spices, cherry tomato spoon sweet, mini sandwiches with “graviera” cheese from Kasos and “mantolina” with multigrain sesame, while your mouth will be filled with the aromas of cinnamon drink and “Aloni” 2015 wine from Lipsi.

And since taste is just one of our senses, the thrilling beauties of the Dodecanese will unfold in a special tribute video which will be screened in our aircraft.

Every Economy class flight with Aegean will be a delightful tasting experience of traditional flavors such as traditional “melekouni” with aromatic thyme honey, natural sesame, almonds, orange and lemon peel and spices, orange and oat “melekouni” bars and marzipan “amygdalato” from Leros island.

Those travelling in Business class will have the opportunity to go a step further in your meeting with the Dodecanesian cuisine, as you will enjoy two menus; morning fishing with shrimps, fish fillet and orgeat of Rodos in crushed wheat with tamarisk and rooster with ragout of potatoes in tomato sauce and herb cream sauce, all accompanied by locally produced white wine from Lipsi island.

Looking forward to “welcoming” you to the Dodecanese as well as treating you on board! And who knows, up there flying at 30,000 feet, you may come closer to a Dodecanesian destination that will capture your heart!
